State road transport corp’s daily loss stood at Rs1.6 crore in 2025-26
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The financial condition of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) continues to be in bad shape with the state transport utility incurring an average daily loss of Rs1.6 crore during the last financial year.As many as 23 out of 31 divisions of the MSRTC have turned out loss making during the last fiscal, as per official data.During the financial year 2025-26, the MSRTC recorded a total operational revenue of Rs 11,475 crore, while its expenditure amounted to Rs12,066 crore. Consequently, the corporation incurred a substantial loss of Rs 591 crore.The average daily revenue of MSRTC stood at Rs31.40 crore, whereas the expenditure reached Rs 33 crore, resulting in a daily loss of approximately Rs 1.60 crore.Expressing concerns over the financial health of the MSRTC, state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik said a comprehensive reform plan would soon be implemented to make the state transportation financially robust."There is an urgent need for placing emphasis on the principles of administrative discipline, effective utilization of resources, and the fixing of accountability," Sarnaik, who chaired the review meeting of the MSRTC on Wednesday, said.
In the previous financial year, the eight divisions of the MSRTC namely, Jalna, Parbhani, Buldhana, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Akola, Dhule, and Wardha were profitable. On the other hand, major divisions such as Nashik, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Ratnagiri, Satara, and Thane are among the remaining 23 divisions that reported heavy losses."In the upcoming financial year, it is imperative to ensure the most efficient utilization of available buses and manpower through proper planning of transport operations. Our primary objective must be to bridge the remaining daily deficit," Sarnaik said.The minister has directed the MSRTC that the loss-making divisions must undergo a thorough inquiry to analyze the underlying causes, followed by the implementation of concrete remedial measures. Additionally, he announced that special emphasis would be placed on appointing competent and efficient officers to the major divisions that have been consistently operating at a loss.
